Abstract

Alginate microbeads have received considerable attention for biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and cell encapsulation, due to their biocompatibility and mild synthesis conditions. The effectiveness of these alginate microbeads are influenced by physical properties, such as volume fraction, shape, and diameter. In this project, we seek to develop a protocol and formula suitable for continuous synthesis of alginate microbeads on our microfluidics-based platform. Several oils have been tested as the continuous phase for alginate microbead synthesis by water-in-oil emulsion. We have successfully carried out the continuous synthesis process and obtained uniform microbeads (577.19 5.46 in diameter). The effects of ionic strength and pH on the synthesis process are currently under investigation.
