Abstract

NASA Aeronautics is interested in hybrid-electric powered flight to achieve highly efficient, low emission, and low noise goals. Using hybrid turbo-electric propulsion systems in aircraft will reduce both emissions and fuel consumption, while also allowing aircraft to have a greater range of travel. Turbo-electric generation systems have typically been in the domain of marine and railroad transportation infrastructure while commercial flight efficient turbo-generation systems do not exist. Aircraft turbofan/turbojet-generators are solely thrust producing devices, with some amount of shaft work being produced to run internal components. Low-cost experiments to obtain an understanding as to the complexities of such a hybrid system on a micro-scale are underway. Design complications encountered during these investigations will offer valuable insight to the unique design challenges of a gas powered turbo generator.
