Abstract

Air pollution is one of the most important environmental and public health issues today. Socio-economics, population growth, and transportation are major factors in a city’s air quality. Though air pollution levels have been decreasing dramatically over the last few decades, some areas have higher levels than others. Various influential factors of primary air pollutants, specifically Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) and dangerously small levels of Particulate Matter (PM 2.5), were explored while accounting for the associated spatio-temporal correlations. Weather data and travel patterns for both Southern California and England were compared to see what effects temperature, time of year, and day of the week had on levels of air pollution in each area. Through analyzing data collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.K. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, correlations between higher levels of air pollution, high temperature weather patterns, and low-income areas are evident.
