Abstract

Traditional home security systems require actual people to monitor day and night. Currently, surveillance systems are expensive and require monthly subscriptions. These systems come with an average monthly fee ranging from $30 to $70. Consumers need security but are limited due to the cost of the products available. Another problem present security systems have is that they are too obvious, which can result in the vandalism of equipment. Our solution to this is to create a low-profile device that can be relatively affordable for consumers while accomplishing the goal of detecting intrusion. This project presents a solar-powered wind chime based home security system that combines a surveillance camera with the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies such as live video feed and Bluetooth capabilities. The product can instantly determine if people are approaching the device using motion detectors. Also, the product will serve daily consumer demands for Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi connectivity, and speaker capabilities. Other features of the product include weather-durability, aesthetic appeal, night vision camera, built-in high capacity battery, light-weight, and stealth. The multi-functional product is designed and fabricated using cost-effective technologies such as 3D printing to make it cost-competitive and attract today’s growing population of frugal homeowners. The team will present their initial research, conceptual designs, and feasibility analysis, along with cost analysis. The proposed product will be evaluated with other similar products available in the market in terms of performance and pricing.
