Abstract

Recycling contamination is a significant issue in the recycling industry. Most of the existing waste management methods are influencing recycling economy negatively. Existing systems require people to separate their items before disposing them into recycling bins. The individuals dispose of their recyclable and non-recyclable items in separate containers. Although this system encourages people to participate in the recycling activities, it caused recycling contamination to skyrocket because many non-recyclable materials get mixed up with recyclable items. An efficient solution would be to design smart mechatronic-based systems to improve the performance of the recycling systems. The goal of this project is to design and fabricate a Smart Recycling Bin product capable of preventing recycling contamination from the first stage of waste collection. The proposed smart recycling bin combines various intelligent technologies to create a smart solution for combating recycling contamination including a smart barcode system that prevents incorrect disposal, a compaction module to increase capacity, and solar power system for clean and renewable energy. The outcome of this project could save millions of dollars, improve the value of recyclable products, and revolutionize recycling economy around the world.
