Abstract

The Bronco Recreational and Intramural Complex (BRIC) started its operation in 2014. Millions of data records were collected on the usage of the facility. It is found that on average 46% of the student body visits the facility throughout each academic year since 2014. As the facility continues to expand its physical fitness and recreational activities, we are interested in understanding:

1) the facility utilizations throughout the last four years;

2) the facility usage patterns relating to gender, age groups, and other factors.

Tableau is used to analyze such a large data-set with approximately 3.4 million records. This research helps to visualize the status and trend of the facility usage. Furthermore, the findings enable us to provide a better understanding on the current BRIC operations. This insight will potentially allow:

1) future expansion (or elimination) plans on activities and equipment;

2) improvements in human resource management; and

3) better budget allocation in the future.

Summary of research results to be presented

The overall usage has increased both in volume and individual frequency since its opening.

The facility's recreational activity volume has distinct characteristics:

Seasonal:

_ Spring of each year has the highest number of traffic but Fall has the highest number of distinct individuals. This means the number of distinct students visiting the facility follows a negative slope.

_ Winter has the lowest number of individuals and foot traffic.

_ Summer time despite having a significant lower volume of attendance, users are found, on average, to attend significantly more frequent.

Age, gender and day of the week:

_ Male students below 20 are more likely to visit the facility on Monday and Wednesday

_ Male students 21 and above are more likely to visit the facility on Tuesdays

_ Female students peak attendance on Wednesdays.
