Abstract

How Instagram is Changing the Art World

Keywords: Social Media, Art, Museum, Demographics, Culture, Change

All over the world, there is a new wave of art installations that have garnered the attention of the public. The installations aren’t traditional museums that showcase classical paintings or big-name gallery exhibitions,. Instead they are made for Instagram and they are changing the art world.

The pervasiveness of social media in the lives of people has changed the way) people view art as consumers of culture. This project is aimed at exploring art as a form of consumption for individuals, understanding the ways consumers experience art through social media, and identifying the future of art and the for these institutions. The institutions in terms of museums and galleries are risking irrelevance as they have cultivated art aimed at a particular demographic

Traditionally, museum culture creates an elite and isolated community with a limited demographic, as only 9% of the minority population makes up core museum visitors today (AMA 2017). More interactive art installations gained the attention of more diverse museum visitors, eagerly arriving with their cameras to experience an Instagrammable moment. Instances of ew pop-up museums suggests a positive correlation between “Instagrammable” art and museum visitors, and it raises questions as to the type of art that the museums of tomorrow will exhibit (Belcolve 2017). As museum visitors engage in art through Instagram, people must examine if cameras hinder their relationships with art. This study reveals implications that suggest, through social media, people are engaging in art in ways they never would otherwise as the study attempts to understand the human experience through art.
