Abstract
Copper complexes have been investigated and tested as oxidation catalysts in many recently published studies. In these studies, the copper complexes have shown promising turnover ratios of alkene substrates to their corresponding alcohols, aldehydes, epoxides and ketones. Developing copper catalysts that can efficiently catalyze the oxidation of alkenes is still an area of scientific endeavors of economic importance. In this study, catalytic oxidation of styrene was investigated with Cu(II) complexes prepared from Schiff base tridentate ligands. The copper complexes CuIIL1-3 [L1-L3 = tridentate N, N, O ligands derived from 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 8-Aminoquinoline, 2-Hydroxy-1-napthaldehyde and 2-(2-aminophenyl)-benzothiazole, 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine, respectively] were synthesized and characterized by the use of FT-IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, Mass Spectroscopy, and Cyclic Voltammetry. The catalytic reactivity of these complexes for the oxidation of styrene with m-CPBA was studied with the use of gas chromatography. The reaction kinetics for each complex with m-CPBA was also spectrophotometrically studied. Other oxygen sources and different reaction parameters are being considered to increase the depth of this research.
