Abstract

The National Academy of Engineers (NAE) provides 14 grand challenges for engineers for improving life on the planet. One of these challenges is providing access to clean water. Disadvantage Communities (DACs) refer to the areas throughout California which most suffer from burdens include poverty, health conditions like air and water pollution. Proposition 1 (Prop1) is the Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure improvement Act which authorized Implementation Grants includes funding for (DACs) Projects. The Coachella Valley has farmland which are worked on by locals. These farmers and their families congregate in communities throughout the valley that have inadequate infrastructure. As Prop 1 allows grant funding for the design of sewer systems for (DACs) that applied. Sunbird Mobile Home Park Sewer Connection Project has been done at the Cal Poly Pomona Civil Engineering Department as serving (DACs). Sunbird Mobile Home Community (Sunbird) is a low community with 450 people in Coachella Valley. They are currently operating under a septic tank system for sewage. This causes a rise in concern for the residential health conditions by poor sanitation infrastructure.

Our team have designing a sewer system connecting the pump station located at the Sunbird to the existing Sewer Pipeline with sanitation sewer access to Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD). The selection of the alternatives also considered incorporates possible expansion to other communities of future development. Our team made a field trips on the site found that the pipeline construction close to the Torres Martinez Reservation. Our surveying team have made a topographic maps on the site. The elevations of this site are all below sea level, and we took advantage on the slopes on the road to design gravity pipe minimized the usage of force main. This sewer connection was based on the (CVWD) sewer design criteria.
