Abstract

Death tolls, due to illicit drugs, prescription drugs, and alcohol have peaked above 90,000. Americans can suffer the deadly consequences of drug abuse as well as the psychological breakdown of drug addiction. Individuals who have survived through a severe substance use disorder (as defined by the DSM-5), and into a program of recovery, are far less than the amount of substance induced deaths each year. Recovery is a multidimensional concept that includes new methods of navigating one’s lives, and that can include parenthood. Parents in recovery can also find themselves enrolling with the 17.6 million undergraduates pursuing education. Academic competence has been linked to a protective factor against drug abuse and addiction. Although college recovery programs have been developed and concentrate on students, no studies have focused on student-parents recovering from substance abuse. This study aims to examine this populations perceived level of stress, mental health outcomes, and academic performance. We aim to include approximately 150 student-parents in recovery from substance abuse. Spanning Universities and Community Colleges in Southern California. Average age range and identified ethnicity will be determined by responses.
