Abstract

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is an extremely useful manufacturing process for machining and post processing though the cost and complexity of EDM machines keep the general population at arm’s length. By miniaturizing and simplifying, the EDM technology can be brought into the maker space where more people will be able to experiment with the process and devise novel ways to create new products. EDM machines are used in the manufacturing industry to make precision cavities in conductive materials. Their advantage is the ability to machine into extremely hard materials. The material removal process is performed using spark erosion in a dielectric fluid. A carbon positive is brought close to the work piece and an electrical pulse is delivered. Small amounts of material erode from the surface of the work piece and the dielectric fluid flushes the particles away. Small hole EDM machines are used to make precision orifices in medical, aerospace and automotive applications. The challenges of small hole EDM deals with the ability to control tooling as small as .003” diameter and trying to maintain tolerances as the hole is drilled through the material. In this project, a team of four undergraduate students are designing and fabricating an ultraprecision micro electro discharge machining system for manufacturing complex three-dimensional metallic components. The poster would describe the design challenges, manufacturing complexities and applications of EDM process.
