Abstract

Children’s literature is a medium which takes full advantage of both visual and literary elements to convey deep resounding messages that educate and amaze children. The interdependent relationship of text and imagery in children’s literature allows for multiple levels of analysis. The purpose of this project is to explore the specific issue of diversity in children’s literature, and the lack thereof. The poster will aim to present the implications this lack of diversity has for children’s views of the world and of themselves. The project also aims to see in what ways children’s literature can teach tolerance and acceptance of diversity in the current political climate. Ultimately the main objective of this poster is to create a dialogue addressing diversity in children’s literature, how to teach children about tolerance and acceptance, and lastly how to create the types of books needed to create a more tolerant and accepting society.
