Abstract

Poetry has become a medium which people use to vocalize their yearnings for social and political change. My poetry deals with depression and being a female bisexual immigrant in a sexist and xenophobic political climate: "Mi lengua carga el poder de mi gente / battling your manifest destiny / porque conocemos nuestro valor / even when you try to devalue it". Through my work I write about my experiences growing up in a different country and how learning a new language has affected me. In my poetry I write about living "a life in terror / where it is so much easier to think about death / than continue living". The purpose of my work is to shed light on the struggles of an immigrant woman with depression as well as the hardships one has to endure as they become self-aware of their own sexuality.
