Abstract

Through outlining both the historical and social contexts that inform Childish Gambino’s “This is America” music video, the study highlights how black oppression evolved overtime through systemic racism while maintaining white elite interests. Moreover, this research will also identify how Gambino’s “This is America,” serves as a marker for social movements like Black Lives Matter and the NFL silent protests. By focusing on these aforementioned discourses, the polarizing realities of the African-American community will be recognized within media. The research will also explain how Gambino’s music video brought black oppression back into the spotlight of mainstream media to push for a resolution today.

In the following pages, I will provide a Close Textual Analysis on Gambino’s “This is America” music video, coupled with the Critical Race Theory to construct the exigency for resolution surrounding black oppression within America. I will follow both the CTA analysis and CRT concepts, and by utilizing additional scholarly observations, I identify how “This is America” attempts to advocate for a resolution surrounding racial inequality. By providing a rhetorical analysis on this artifact, I will identify the gaps in research that explain Gambino’s impact on society surrounding black oppression.
