Abstract

Salicylic acid poly(anhydride ester) (SAPAE) is a polymer with salicylic acid chemically incorporated into the backbone. In our research, we used this polymer to coat magnesium (Mg) alloy implants which have been widely studied as orthopedic implants such as bone fixation devices. The coating used on the Mg alloy surface slows down the corrosion and degradation rate of Mg, while the degradation products can provide an anti-inflammatory response. The 3D laser scanning microscopy observations showed that the protective film on the Mg substrate via spin coating has a uniform thickness and roughness. This film reduced the water contact angle compared to the pure Mg substrate, while the Tafel test found that coated Mg samples have high corrosion resistance.
