Abstract

Various cationic and anionic dyes are used in textile and leather industries. Unfortunately, the dye waste cause water contamination resulting in adverse health and environmental effects. Therefore, recovery of these dyes from wastewater is of economic and environmental benefit. In this study, we present an environmentally friendly approach for the removal of dyes using a hydrophobic, amino acid based ionic liquid, L-valine bis (trifluoromethane) sulfonimide. We extracted various dyes including acid orange, acid yellow, methyl orange, methylene blue, fluorescein, rhodamine, malachite green, m-cresol using the synthesized valine-based ionic liquid. This method avoids the use of volatile organic solvents for extraction. The conditions for optimum extraction efficiency was investigated as well as the possibility of recycling the ionic liquid for multiple extractions of the dyes from aqueous solutions. Over 90% extraction efficiencies from water was obtained for the dyes. These results suggest the potential applications of this ionic liquid in extracting textile dyes for forensic analysis and environmental remediation by removing dyes from wastewater.
