Abstract

This project presents the development of the TED (Tap Encoding Decoding) program and the results of its usage. TED is a program to be used in partnership with a tap dancer for decoding tap dancing. A tap dancer must execute their performance with steps that encode morse code. We will elaborate on the processes by which TED was developed and methodologies, such as peak detection using a Fast Fourier Transform and decoding via accumulated audio analysis. We also explore the relationship developed between the dancer and TED during experimentation and live performance. A dancer's cognitive processes were extended as they incorporated and adapted to TED's outputs during their performance. Programmatic constraints were also introduced that challenged choreography and imposed structure in improvisation.
