Abstract

Wind energy is a promising method of producing clean energy as it seeks to eliminate carbon emissions thereby conserving the environment. Not only does wind energy aid in providing clean energy, but also ensures the conservation of the lost kinetic energy through air resistance. Although the energy company seeks to promote the use of clean energy, the high vehicle traffic in the urban areas still derails this goal. Nonetheless, the wind produced by the locomotives could be put too active use by turbines. Wind turbines are an excellent opportunity to reclaim some of the energy lost to drag force on high ways. The average energy produced by a car driving on a freeway in California is about 14 kW of its fuel pushing air when driving at a speed of 60 m/h. The goal of this project is to develop a smart technology to harness the wind energy generated by the rushing traffic on freeways with the help of a portable wind turbine. The power produced may be used for different application including powering the streetlight, providing energy for charging electric vehicles and so on. The study includes design and analysis of different portable turbine structures which can be retrofitted into street poles. The airflow from both the sides of the road is tapped to operate the wind turbine and produce electricity. The success of this project will be crucial in sustaining our efforts to develop a clean energy-based environment on freeways and the surrounding region.
